This is how to Increase Maximum Connections Courier-Imap on CentOS, CloudLinux or RedHat. Courier-Imap limits the maximum incoming imap and pop3 connections to the server. You need to modify your IMAP and POP3 conf files, but first backup the folder /etc/courier-imap see below.

If you’re running Courier-Imap for your email server on CentOS, CloudLinux or RedHat based operating systems you might of got an error trying to connect to a lot of your email accounts using an email client such  as Thunderbird or Outlook saying:

Unable to connect to your imap server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use the Advanced IMAP server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cache connections.

OR

You might of seen an error in your courier-imap log files saying:

Courier-Imapd: Maximum Connection Limit Reached for :ffff:

How to Backup your Courier-Imap Conf Files

MAXPERIP=80

Hit CTRL+X then hit Y to save the file.

Edit the /etc/courier-imap/pop3d file:

nano /etc/courier-imap/pop3d

You will now need to stop Courier-Imap service and then start the Courier-Imap service for the changes to take effect.

Restart Courier-Imap CentOs

If you have a lot of people connecting from the same location such as a big company or corporation you can increase the connections to even higher limits. These settings should be good, but if you’re editing the courier-imap server settings for a corporation then increase the settings.
